April Unemployment Rate Lowest in 15 Years

The Indiana Department of Workforce Development has released the April Unemployment Report. The rate reported for Huntington County was 4.1%. The County's jobless rate dropped below 5% briefly in 2014 however the 4.1% rate is the lowest since 2000.

The Huntington County rate dropped from 5.7% in March this year when 1,031 Huntington County residents were reported as unemployed. The April report indicated 763 Huntington County residents were unemployed.

The jobs report is very encouraging for Indiana and Huntington County. The local rate peaked in June of 2009 at 14.3% when 2,977 Huntington County residents were unemployed. "We've now experienced what I hope is a never to be repeated high rate (June 2009) as well as a new standard toward the full employment end of the spectrum (April 2015)," said Mark Wickersham, executive director of the Huntington County Economic Development Corporation.  "As long as the rate is above zero we know there is more to do to help create jobs. It is very encouraging though to see the trends stabilizing," Wickersham added.  "Economic Development is a team effort and Huntington County has a very supportive team,"  He concluded.
