March Unemployment Picture Improves in Huntington County
Huntington, Indiana --
The Indiana Department of Workforce Development released the March 2012 Unemployment Report. The unemployment rate in Huntington County stood at 8.5% according to their report. This is a slight improvement from the February report of 8.8%.
According to the State's data, 161 more Huntington County residents were employed in March than during February. March is the third consecutive month the unemployment rate has improved. Historically, the Huntington County rate was significantly higher than the State-wide rate. The rate for Huntington County in March was slightly below the State-wide rate of 8.6% and ranked Huntington County with the 38th lowest unemployment rate among Indiana's 92 Counties.
"It is important to remember that the basis of the data is the County of residence, not the County of employment," said Mark Wickersham, Executive Director of Huntington County Economic Development. "The report confirms the picture in Northeast Indiana continues to improve. Huntington County and Northeast Indiana employers are beginning to see light at the end of the tunnel," he added. "The statistics are very encouraging, however, we are not immune to global and national economic and political instability. The numbers can change very quickly and we should use caution when trying to define economic performance based entirely on the data released by the State," he concluded.
