Unemployment Increases During January Reporting Period March 13, 2024 Report The Indiana Department of Workforce Development in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, has released the unemployment report for January of 2024. The rate reported for Huntington County was 3.7%. The January report covers the period from December 11, 2023 - January 10, 2024. "The rate in Huntington County for the January reporting period, nearly always increases significantly from the previous reporting period," said Mark Wickersham, executive director of the Huntington County Economic Development Corporation. "The January report includes several dynamics which are difficult to use as a true gage of the health of the job market. It includes holiday retail hiring and the layoffs after the holidays. Also, it is not uncommon for industries to reduce their workforce during the holidays for maintenance and re-tooling," Wickersham added. According to the job posting site, Indeed.com, 286 jobs are currently available within 10 miles of Huntington. "We just concluded a job fair, which included 14 employers who all are still trying to hire. Dozens of potential workers attended the March 7th event at the Huntington County Courthouse," said Wickersham. Again, the current rate was posted at 3.7% while the December reporting period (November 11, 2023 - December 10, 2023) was sited at 2.5% and 286 jobs are immediately available within 10 miles of Huntington.
